Carey [1840-1909] was a popular novelist. This novel follows Robert Ord, a dissolute playboy living and spending recklessly. He falls in love but is rejected. Eventually, his actions lead to a tragedy, and he spends the rest of his life trying to help others and make amends for his excesses. This novel was originally published in 1884.
