Turner, produced during the war to boost morale and also to preserve the social world of Britain, in case it did not survive. The paintings used for illustrations in this volume are gorgeous. Gems abound, such as the lovely color plate of the plan of Canterbury in the 16th century. Collins assembled many great writers for the series. In this case, the poet Betjeman applied his wit and knowledge of history to capture the long history of British cities and towns.
