A Topographical Dictionary of England.

SKU: 15758

Reprint of the book originally published in 1831, maintaining all the original maps and illustrations. The original four volumes are bound in two large volumes in handsome red cloth. Every location in England plus islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Man,  is listed in alphabetical order. Edward Knight of Godmersham is one of the subscribers listed in the front, with others of interest. This enormous work was no mean feat. Lewis explains that "several gentlemen were engaged to procure, by personal examination and enquiry, the fullest information upon the various subjects contemplated in the plan of the work...". Unfortunately we don't have a lifetime to read every one of the over 2,000 pages (2 columns in small print). Because we would! The entry on London alone could provide a semester worth of study. Near fine. Published by Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore MD, 1996. 2 vols. USED. $75.00
