Little Journeys to the Homes of Famous Women.

SKU: 10796-2

Do not expect a travel book. The author [1856-1915] wrote mini-biographies to accompany his brief prosaic travel tales. This book covers Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Madame Guyon, H Martineau, Charlotte Bronte, C Rossetti, R Bonheur, M de Stael, Ellizabeth Fry, Mary Lamb, Jane Austen, Empress Josephine, and Mary Shelley. His description of his late 19th c visit to Steventon is wonderful. His bio of Jane Austen is a little off for those who have read so many well-researched works from the 20th century, but it is fun and personable and brings Austen to life, and who can complain about that? Dark blue cover with gilt title and decorations on spine and front cover, top pages gilt. All is bright and clean, binding tight. 429 pages plus ads for the Little Journeys series. G. P. Putnam's Sons, London & NY, 1897. Hb.  USED. $50.00
