The State of Mind of Mrs. Sherwood.
Mrs. Sherwood, aka Mary Martha Butt [1772-1851] wrote between 300-400 books during her life, and one of them, "Fairchild Family," outcirculated Edgeworth, Austen, Sir Walter Scott, Dickens, Thackeray, and the Brontes. Royde-Smith [1875-1964], herself a prolific author, has traced the more important titles and reconsidered Mrs. Sherwood's autobiography, finding many surprises. She also brings to light information on the outlook of educated gentry in the first half of the 19th century. Here is an Austen contemporary woman writer, buried by time as so many have been, studied by another woman writer, before rescuing these histories became popular. Worn, price-cut jacket in mylar, otherwise good/very good. Macmillan and Co., London. 1946. Hb, Dj. USED. $$15.00
