The Kentish Stour.

SKU: 17598

The author traveled the Kentish Stour "from source to sea." Along the way he stopped and asked questions and took pictures, documented in this delightful travel book. Farms, villages, grand estates, the city of Canterbury, are all covered with attention to the best kind of detail, interesting to the historian who can stand in a place and be told what was seen looking straight ahead across an intersection in the early 1950's. Quite a bit of time is spent on the Austens and Knights, and the history of Godmersham, with quotes from Jane Austen's letters. There is a white stain on the front cover; otherwise the cover is very clean. The book is slightly cocked but the box stitching is still tight. Pages are very clean other than a tanned area of pgs 218-19 where some note must have been left for a long time. No jacket. Cassell & Co Ltd. London. 1953. Hb. USED. $35.00
