The Nineteenth-Century Church and English Society.

SKU: 18127

This study focuses on the years 1800-1870, and considers the meaning of Anglicanism for ordinary people in 19th century England, rather than the leaders of the Church. Knight plumbed unpublished sources in rural areas and throughout the kingdom to analyze beliefs and practices of lay people and clergy. By looking at the Church at the parish level, she shows how policies formed at the top actually affected everyday people, and shows that many changes were initiated at the local level. She also shows how the Anglican Church continued to shift from a provider of charity to concern with public worship and ritual ceremonies.
