She explains how 16th and 17th Dutch struggles for independence from Spain presaged the American revolt, and how France's support for the war drained its treasury, helping to bring down the ancien regime. She follows three major figures in depth: English Admiral Sir George Brydges Rodney, Lord Cornwallis, and French Admiral Francois Joseph Paul de Grasse.
