Jennings focuses on what Frankin did, rather than what he said he did in his autobiography. By skirting some of his actions, including his struggles with Thomas Penn, Franklin underplayed his role in forming a new nation. He knew the superiority of his own mind but hid behind a public face of modesty, allowing others to establish his reputation by praising him.
