The Private War of Mrs. Packard.

SKU: 11359

Introduction by Eric T. Carlson, MD. Mrs. Elizabeth Packard [1816-1897] was wrongfully committed to an insane asylum by her Calvinist minister husband for arguing with him about points of doctrine. Three years later she was freed when a jury quickly determined she was not insane. She became an activist in reforming laws that allowed husbands to commit their wives on a whim, and fought for divorced women's rights to keep their children. By the time she died she had become an important national figure who changed the way people in the US looked at mental illness. Like new but jacket may have light sun fading. Paragon House, New York.
