In addition to being one of the greatest satiric novelists of her time, Frances Burney [1752-1840] also led a very connected life and knew many of the greatest influencers of her time. As a teenager, her family circle included famous people like David Garrick and Samuel Johnson. She served in George III and Queen Charlotte's court. She married a French emigre, lived with him and their son in Napoleon's France in exile for 10 years. Her writings are not only enjoyable for her descriptions of fascinating characters; they are also a window into a highly creative person who lived in a critical time. All four volumes together makes around 2,000 pages. George Bell and Sons. London.York Street, Covent Garden. 1891. Hardcover. USED. $50.00
