In the summer of 1518, Frau Troffea began to dance in the streets of Strasbourg. Over the next two months, roughly 400 people succumbed to the strange malady that created this agonizing compulsion, with about 100 of them dancing to their deaths. They sweated, they bled, they suffered. There are theories, such as one that they had inadvertently eaten poison.
