Arms and the Woman: The Intimate Journal of an Amorous Baltic Nobleman in the Napoleonic Wars.
Translated by Joel Carmichael. Notes, foreword, and epilogue by Detlev Von Uexkull. Baron Boris Uxkull's diaries were written between the age of 18 and 26. They were held by the family for 150 years before being released in Germany in 1965. He describes with humor and wit his encounters with many people whose names we still know today, and his experiences of key events. Uxkull has a busy life but finds time whenever he can to rendezvous with women. He survives his role as a supply officer in the Russian Army during the Napoleonic Wars. After the triumphant entry into Paris, he lives there and describes his life there. Then he records his romantic times with a young woman he met while studying philosophy with Hegel at Heidelberg.
