The Trumpet of Glory: The military career of John Shipp, first veterinary surgeon to join the British Army.

SKU: 10645

John Shipp joined the British Army in 1796 as its first fully qualified veterinarian. Before that time, the care of sick horses in the British Army was notoriously horrible. As cavalry officers came to realize the strategic problems caused by poor care of horses, the Duke of York contacted the recently established London Veterinary College and hired one of the first graduates from the school.  Through careful research, Dr Gray tells the remarkable story of John Shipp, including the hard life soldiers led in campaigns from the Peninsula to Waterloo.
