Jane Austen, Daddy's Girl. The Life and Influence of The Revd George Austen.
Foreword by Caroline Jane Knight. This book is combination of biography of Austen's father and a discussion of their father-daughter relationship. Drawing heavily from letters and historical documents like bank accounts and wills, Wheddon gives an affectionate account of the Revd George. She draws inferences on their relationship from Austen's novels and juvenilia and the family's celebrated humor. She also refers to recent research on the family, and includes a summary of Devoney Looser's recent revelations about the Revd Austen's role acting as trustee for a young man whose family owned enslaved people on estates in Antigua. This is a balanced book that fills in much of George's early life that is glossed over in the typical JA biography. Plates, bibliography, end notes, index. Pen & Sword History. 2024. Hb, Dj.
