Edited and with introduction by Rosalind Ballaster. First published in 1709, a dazzling satirical expose of the sexual and political intrigues of courtiers, courtesans, politicians, and arisitocrats of early 18th century England. Manley [1663-1724] was as well known as Swift in her day. The book weaves together sexual and political allegory to vilify her Whig opponents. Ballaster's extensive endnotes identify the actual characters behind her allusions. Manley took in stride being arrested for her publications. She also attacked misogyny in her writings, but her political mission came first. A few pages in the first chapter have underlining; otherwise the book is Very Good; jacket with a bit of age discoloration and a tear on the back. The underlining/mariginilia creates a great deal for someone who wants to own and read this scarce book. New York University Press. 1992. Hb, Dj. USED. $45.00
