Intro by Fay Weldon. Mary Brunton [1778-1818] was a Scottish novelist whose books were quite popular. Austen commented in a letter on her novel Self Control that was published in 1809. This book was published in 1814. Brunton was happily married, and apparently encouraged by her husband to acquire education and to write, yet she could write of women struggling in a man's world.
