Riding to the Tigris.

SKU: 11468

Traveling with muleteers and the occasional chance companion, Stark [1893-1993] trekked on horseback from Lake Van on the high Turkish plateau through the mountainous Hakkiari where she spent time with the Kurds down to the River Tigris. Along the way she stayed in unplanned locations (an empty hospital, nomad tents) and met interesting people (a young Turkish schoolmaster traveling with his violin, a jester and his son, a police escort here and there). Stark wrote over 2 dozen books that feature her travels in the Middle East and Afghanistan, being one of the first non-Arabs known to have traveled in this area in modern times. Includes many of her b&w photos. 1st US edition. Very good condition. Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York. 1959. Hb, Dj. $25.00
