Hannah More [1745-1833] was a household name in her time, as a best-selling poet, a playwright, and a devoted reformer who worked to improve education for women and the poor, to reform manners and morals, and who was devoted to abolition of Britain's slave trade. Prior's biography shows that More was no doubt human, with blind spots as well as insights, but also a driven woman who worked hard  to use what we'd call today her privelege to change the world. More knew luminaries of the time like Sir Joshua Reynolds and Samuel Johnson and was close friends with William Wilberforce, and her biography also reveals how she moved in that society as a woman writer.
