Introduction by George Kendal Delahanty. Illustrated. "Written by Herself" on the title page, but written by Lamothe-Langon [1786-1864], a historian and author who wrote "memoirs" of historical figures. Du Barry [1743-1793] was one member of the petticoat dynasty triad during the reign of Louis XV, having that job from 1768-1774. Formerly she was a popular courtesan among top aristocrats in Paris. She was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution, charged with helping emigres escape. Here, she tells the story of becoming the king's paramour (without official recognition due to her humble origin). Marie Antionette famously refused to speak to her when she first moved in. 2 volumes. Attractive green cloth with royal insignia on front. Top pages gilt. Paper weak and torn in hinges. Rugby Press. nd, c c.1900. USED. $35.00.
