Without Regard to Good Manners: A Biography of Gilbert Stuart 1743-1786.
SKU: 11813
Stuart [1742-1786] was a curmudgeonly writer of literary reviews. With his father, he started the short-lived "Edinburgh Magazine and Review," then returned to London to become one of the principal writers on John Murray I's "The English Review." He also wrote on history, especially history of Scotland and the Scottish church. He wrote more broadly as well, with his most important work being "A View of Society in Europe" (1788), reprinted many times. Well known in his day for strong positions including arguments supporting democratic ideals, his story is worth knowing today. Like young Jane Austen, he was a passionate defender of Mary, Queen of Scots. No jacket. Very good/like new. Edinburgh University Press. 1992. Hb. USED. $30.00
