The Doctor's Wife.
Edited with an Introduction and Notes by Lyn Pickett. First published in 1864, this novel came out when M. E. Braddon [1835-1915] was already well known for her scandalous bestseller "sensational" novel Lady Autdley's Secret. Braddon's novels of bigamy and adultery were also sensationalized by her personal life, as she was an actress and involved in her own illegitimate marriage. The Doctor's Wife is Braddon's most literary work. Isabel Gilbert is trapped in a marriage with a man who does not understand her. Braddon modeled her story after Flaubert's Madame Bovary, but with much different details and consequences. In addition to founding a magazine, magazine publishing and editing, Braddon wrote over 80 novels, ranging from supernatural to historical fiction to the "senstational" women's novels. Lightly used, very good condition. Oxford World's Classics. 1998. Paper. USED. $9.00
