Kemble [1809-1893] was an English theatre actress, popular writer of plays, poetry, and memoirs. After spending time on her husband's island plantations, she became an abolitionist. As a girl she attended Reading Abbey School, where Cassandra and Jane Austen had attended a few years before. Among her relatives were famous actors - aunt Sarah Siddons and uncle John Philip Kemble, and her sister Adelaide was a famous opera signer. Fanny lived many years in the United States. Her son married Ulyesses S. Grant's daughter. In 1832, she traveled with her father from English to tour as a working actress in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Washington, and Montreal, where she wrote in this journal every night after her performances, offering a unique view of American life at that time.
