Woollcott [1887-1943] was a critic and commentator for the New Yorker magazine and on radio. In this book, the famous critic tells perhaps-true anecdotes about people he may  have come into contact with. This collection of essays appeared in The New Yorker and other magazines.  Interesting for us, the book includes a short essay in which he discusses his love for Jane Austen. The essay was prompted by his excitement over a new work by Austen, because in the same year as the essay (1933) Volume the First was released by Oxford! He is delighted with this new discovery.
