Charlotte and Lionel: A Rothschild Love Story.

SKU: 11582

Weintraub had full access to Rothschild papers for this double biography [1808-1884]. It's a love story set against a background of great wealth and power, as two cousins whose marriage was arranged to unite two branches of the most powerful banking firm in Europe nonetheless found happiness. They had great influence in their time, helping fund efforts to feed people in Ireland and aid persecuted Jews in Eastern Europe. among other projects. Lionel's refusal to take the Christian oath for Parliament finally forced the issue, breaking an important barrier to non-Christians. This makes for an interesting window into Victorian times.
