Doctor Syntax's Three Tours: In Search of the Picaresque, Consolation, and a Wife.

SKU: 18177

"The original edition, complete and unabridged, with the life and adventures of the author, now first written, by John Camden Hotten. Eighty full page illustrations drawn and coloured after the originals by T. Rowlandson." Jane Austen and her family would have enjoyed this indescribable eipc poem and satirical comedy. Combe and the illustrator Rowlandson co-created the character of Dr. Syntax in 1809. While satirizing William Gilpin's concept of the picturesque, the excessively-chinned Syntax encounters many other aspects of British life in his travels that offer opportunities for humor.  This book is beautifully preserved and has been specially bound in red half calf with marbled paper, 5-ribbed highly decorated spine, red silk page marker, and top edges of pages gilt. The plates are gorgeous in bright colors. Hotten, who wrote the biography of Combe, was also the publisher. No date but probably after 1866; definitely before 1873 when Hotten died and the firm became Chatto and Windus. USED. $325.00
