Jane Austen has been important to soldiers in times of war, paraded as a feminist, deemed most conservative, found to be the first modern novelist, and read as classical. Nowadays she has gone beyond postfeminist and is on the global stage, in policital discoure on the internet, a symbol for Englishness and for Western ideals.
