The Englishman's Holiday: A Social History.

SKU: 15119

This is a 2nd edition, revised, to follow up on the original that was published in 1947. New intro by J. Myerscough. Pimlott shows how the rise of the holiday, visiting Blackpool, Brighton, the mountains, the countryside, big houses, in the summer, profoundly changed people's lives. The pier, the bathing machine, Richard Nash, Tunbridge Wells, Bath, Ramsgate, all are dealt with in an entertaining and enlightening manner. Austen is mentioned several times, as are many other novelists and artists, making this a literary resource as well as a social history. I fancy a little sea-bathing myself!
