Beresford [1764-1840], an English rector, wrote The Miseries in 1806, and it was widely praised, and reviewed by no less than Sir Walter Scott. Divided into categories like Miseries Personal, Existential, and of the Body, Miseries of the Table, Miseries of Social Life, Miseries of the Country, Miseries of the Town. This "pageant of calamities" is presented in a series of "Groans," each a detailed description of the horrors of normal life.
