The Miseries of Human Life.
Beresford [1764-1840], an English rector, wrote The Miseries in 1806, and it was widely praised, and reviewed by no less than Sir Walter Scott. Divided into categories like Miseries Personal, Existential, and of the Body, Miseries of the Table, Miseries of Social Life, Miseries of the Country, Miseries of the Town. This "pageant of calamities" is presented in a series of "Groans," each a detailed description of the horrors of normal life. It was an instant best-seller and was published all over the world, in several editions. Rediscovered and printed in a slim little book with fun contemporary illustrations, delightful calligraphy, a pretty jacket plus illustrated cover, ribbon page marker, marbled inside end boards.
