Bath: An Adumbration in Rhyme. A Critical Edition for Readers of Jane Austen.
This is the first book in a new series "Forgotten Contemporaries of Jane Austen" which will bring us writers of interest we haven't heard about before, but who might have been read by Jane Austen or members of her family, providing a welcome new window into Austen's world. Annotations are on the opposing page with the text. The book includes some gorgeous color illustrations, and an enjoyable and enlightening contextual essay. Also includes a biographical essay on Matthews, chronologies of Matthews and Austen, a bibliography, a list of contemporary reviews of Matthews's poem, and a series introduction. Similar to our beloved Juvenilia Press, this endeavor is not only a welcome addition to Austen studies, but is also a valuable learning exercise, as the editor Ben Wiebracht is working with high school students to research, design, and edit the books. Perhaps we will see some of these young people's names again in the future. Pixelia Publishing. 2021. Paper. NEW. $9.50
