Charlotte Brooke's Reliques of Irish Poetry.

SKU: 17481

Charlotte Brooke [c.1740-1793] sought to preserve the works of Irish poets. She published this work in 1789, a result of cooperation between Catholic Gaelic scholars and scribes and Protestant antiquarians. The poems were printed in Gaelic with English translations. This marked a new era in cooperation, and recognition of rich Irish culture. This new annotated edition shows the poems in the light in which Brooke intended. There are also new translations of the poems, with an assessment of her success as a translator. Valuable for insight into the history, literature, and culture of Ireland, as well as cultural, postcolonial, and translation studies. Very good condition but has some underlining and marginalia in the introduction from a previous owner. Irish Manuscripts Commission. 2009. Hb. Dj. USED. $45.00
