Jane Austen's Romantic Medievalism: Courtly Love and Happy Endings.
SKU: 17969
This study argues that Austen's works are deeply engaged with the medieval tradition and Christian romantic ideas of courtly love and happy endings. These ideas were being reexamined in Austen's lifetime. While deeply invested in medieval philosophy of happiness, Austen changed the story by giving tests of chivalry to both sexes and showing women as rational creatures. The author also argues Austen's ironic voice and critique of romance is based in the paradoxes of Christian theology. Enjoyable and informative. List price $105.00. Lehigh University Press. 2024. Hb.
