Beowulf. A Translation and Commentary.

SKU: 18090

Edited by Christopher Tolkien. The book also includes a tale by Tolkien, Sellic Spell. Christopher Tolkien had a challenge. His father's 1926 translation, occasionally edited over the years, was obviously never amended to reflect the knew thinking Tolkien developed through years of teaching the subject, during which Tolkien wrote many many lessons. Rather than try to incorporate changes based on those essays into the 1926 version, Christopher decided to print his father's original version and then add selected sections of his father's notes as commentary.  Preface, Introduction, Beowulf, Notes on the Translation, Inroduction to the Commentary, Commentary, Sellic Spell, The Lay of Beowulf. 1st US edition.
